Taking place in 1943, at the height of World War II, Number the Stars follows the acts of Copenhagen citizens trying to rescue their Jewish neighbors from the searching eyes of Nazi patrols. Around this time, the Nazi party eagerly closed all Jewish owned shops and began sending Jews to the deadly concentration camps. Focusing on 10 year old Annemarie Johansen, who joins with her family to protect her best friend, Ellen Rosen, the play tells of the pain, sacrifice, and redemption that befell so many Europeans, young and old, during this time.
